Victory Gardens is growing and the 2017 season is right around the corner, that’s why we need you! We’re looking for some stellar new team members to help us in various positions!

If you would like to be a part of a team who builds food gardens and teaches people how to grow food in them, all while increasing urban food assets and decreasing our environmental impact, then take a look below and see if there’s a position for you!

Volunteer Applicants: Our requirements for availability are flexible and we are keen to work with your schedule. Some folks volunteer a few times a week and others monthly.

Volunteer Positions

We love our volunteers and could not be where we are without you! Victory Gardens is a diverse business with many unique experiences to offer. We are looking for volunteers with an interest in all parts of the business, but also welcome those with specific areas of expertise and interest. This 2016 year, we want to offer as rounded an experience as possible with time in our greenhouse at HQ, helping install gardens AND maintaining them, and on the back-end with record keeping & stock updating. Expect great opportunities to connect with Vancouver’s ever growing young agrarian movement with events throughout the year too!

The Position

We’re looking for stellar people to assist in the installation of edible gardens and planting and maintaining all of our ongoing customer’s veggie gardens, plus performing general landscaping tasks for our ongoing ornamental gardens in Vancouver, BC. You are a person who not only loves plants, but is perceptive, self-directed and is able to troubleshoot and communicate issues that may arise in the garden. You also love a good physical day outside. You will get to learn the ins and outs of building organic vegetable gardens and learn the ins and outs of growing and maintaining organic vegetable gardens in all kinds of spaces. Not to mention you’ll get to work outside all summer long! Dreamy! Who needs the gym?

Responsibilities:

  • Garden Installation:
    • Assist with the delivery/pick-up of all inputs necessary for installations
    • Provide manual labour
    • Ensure tools and supplies are organized
    • Ensure job sites are tidy through-out installation
  • Veggie Garden Maintenance:
    • Help with all maintenance and landscaping installations for new gardens
    • Help perform all ongoing veggie maintenance for existing customers: This includes planting, maintaining, organic pest control, weeding, and harvesting when needed
    • Help perform all ongoing landscaping maintenance for existing customers
    • Perform greenhouse tasks when needed, such as assist in starter production and supplies pick-up
    • Ability and willingness to trouble shoot and ask for help when it’s needed
  • Greenhouse & Site Maintenance
    • Help us grow and cultivate veggies from seed throughout the season
    • Ensure seedling mix is prepped for starter production
    • Help with maintenance including watering, pest control, and more
    • Assist in compiling customer & online orders
    • Help bag soil, compost, ensure tools are organized
    • Update seed and supplies inventory

We’re Looking For:

  • Someone who enjoys working outdoors and has good rain gear
  • Self-starter attitude and time management skills
  • Ability to manage heavy lifting an asset
  • Flexibility to adapt to a changing schedule
  • Professionalism and reliability
  • An individual who is focused and pays attention to detail
  • Exceptional communication skills, verbal and written

Terms:

  • Operate within VG Agreement
  • This is an unpaid, volunteer position from Early March – September
  • Ideal weekly availability is 4 to 8 hours, during weekdays
  • Volunteers ideally commit for the entire volunteer period

Photographer

The Position

We’re looking for a stellar person to assist in photo documentation and website updates for our site and online shop. You will get a balance of working outside taking photos of beautiful and productive food gardens, and gaining experience in wordpress, editing, archiving and updating.

Responsibilities:

  • Photo Documentation:
    • Photograph installs before and after
    • Photograph progress of gardens
    • Work with Garden Coach to photograph educational process in the garden
    • Take product photos for online shop
    • Devise other photo projects for VG, such as “customer profiles”
  • Archiving:
    • Create an archive of all documented work in a cohesive manner
    • Create and include titles and descriptions for gardens
  • Web Management:
    • Update projects/events page

We’re Looking For:

  • Photography experience, graphic design and photoshop skills are an asset
  • No website experience required
  • Exceptional communication skills, verbal and written
  • Self-starter attitude and time management skills
  • Flexibility to adapt to an ever-changing schedule
  • Professionalism and reliability

Terms:

  • This is an unpaid volunteer position
  • Ideal hourly availability is approx 10 – 12 hours/month
  • We need a volunteer from February until September and volunteer must be able to commit to entire term
